Model 1940, stamped steel construction, box buckle, with a dark blue/black finish. The buckle features a smooth outer field with a central embossed, horizontally oval, laurel leaf wreath encompassing a slightly domed, pebbled inner field with an embossed, second pattern. Circa 1940-1945), Luftwaffe eagle with out-stretched wings, clutching a canted swastika in its talons, to the center. The reverse of the buckle is a mirror image of the obverse, excluding the pebbled inner field. The reverse has the brazed buckle catch, prong bar and prongs all intact. The buckle has no visible manufacturer’s marks. Retains 95%+ of finish.
The Luftwaffe was the aerial-warfare branch of the Wehrmacht before and during World War II. Germany’s military air arms during World War I, the Luftstreitkräfte of the Imperial Army and the Marine-Fliegerabteilung of the Imperial Navy, had been disbanded in May 1920 in accordance with the terms of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles which banned Germany from having any air force.
