Very nice condition membership badge for the Austrian national socialist veterans militia Verband Deutsche Wehr, or VDW. Made in Tombac and enamel, the badge is 16mm tall with a 42mm pin. Marked on the reverse with maker HCH IIMM BERLIN C19.
The VDW, Verband Deutsche Wehr, was a National Socialist like militia organization which was organized in the 1920s in parallel to the NSDAP in Germany. After the accession of Engelbert Dollfuss and his Austro-Fascist regime the VDW was banned in Austria in 1933. Many of the members of the disbanded would eventually join underground national socialist groups and welcome Hitler’s German entry into Austria in 1938.
