The German Youth Hostel Association (DJH) is a registered, non-profit organization. Through its regional associations, it is the sponsor of 408 youth hostels in Germany (as of 2023) and is therefore the largest member of the international youth hostel association Hostelling International (HI).[2] The main association based in Detmold is divided into 14 regional associations and 57 local and district associations that work on a voluntary basis. It has more than 2.3 million members.

On March 12, 1933, Schirrmann, as chairman of the Reich Association for German Youth Hostels, signed the Kösen Agreement on cooperation between the Youth Hostel Association and the Reich Youth Leadership of the NSDAP, which led to the association’s integration into the Hitler Youth. Through this agreement and other self-harmonizing measures such as the removal from their offices of the Social Democratic (and a few Jewish) officials who had been accepted since 1919, the officials demonstrated their willingness to cooperate.
